FAQs

  • Prior to your treatment the procedure will be fully explained and consented to, a full medical history will be taken and photographs of your face before the treatment will be taken for your record. After care advice will be given to you verbally and in writing. Your practitioner will determine where to administer the injections by examining your ability to move certain muscles on your face, then she will cleanse the skin and administer several tiny injections.

The injection procedure is quick and relatively painless. The needles used are very small, and usually no anaesthetic is required, however a topical anaesthetic cream can be used if necessary. Ideally, to minimise the risk of bruising it is advisable to: Discontinue the use of aspirin, st johns wort, vitamin E, evening primrose oil, ginseng and ginkgo for 2 weeks. Discontinue other non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and alcohol consumption for 2 days before treatment

  • The treatment itself normally takes about 10 minutes, depending on the number of areas of the face that you are having treated. You should allow extra time for your consultation, consent and after care advice. Usual duration is 30 minutes in total.

  • No! One of the reasons that this treatment is so popular is the subtle improvement in your appearance. Friends may comment on how relaxed and refreshed you look - the treatment will not radically alter your appearance: it will simply reduce muscle activity. The final result is tailored to each patient.

  • Most side effects are mild and transient, they include headaches, tiny red marks from the injection site that settle within a few hours and can be easily covered with makeup. Bruising can occur so to prevent this, ice packs are used before and after the injections are given and it is advisable to stop taking Vitamin E supplements or anti-inflammatory medications a week prior to your treatment. Headaches and cold and flu like symptoms can occur and can be treated with paracetomol. Occasionally the eyebrow can be slightly heavier on one side after treatment but this is temporary. Conversely there may be some unintended benefits in some people such as easing of tension type headaches as the muscles in the forehead relax. A full medical history will be taken and consent obtained before botulinum toxin is prescribed. If you decide not to continue with treatment, the lines will gradually return to their natural baseline appearance, and full muscle movement will be regained.

  • People with infection at the proposed injection site. People who have previously had an allergic reaction to Botulinum toxin type A injections. Impaired healing (eg immunosuppression). People with muscle problems or chronic diseases affecting the muscles, such as Myasthenia Gravis, Eaton Lambert syndrome. Children under the age of 18 years. Women who are pregnant or breast feeding.

  • Head to my appointments page where you will see a list of clinics that I work from. Choose the most suitable time and location and follow the links to book. If it is your first treatment book a ‘consultation’.

About Wrinkle Relaxation

Botox’ Botox®, Azzalure, Bo-coture are all trade names and licensed products of botulinum toxin type A. This is the most popular non-surgical anti-ageing treatment in the world.

Lines on your face form over time as a result of repeated muscle activity. This treatment blocks transmission of nerve impulses causing the muscles to relax, creating a smoother, more youthful and fresh look. Wrinkle relaxing treatments are usually the treatment of choice for facial rejuvenation and for softening lines in the upper third of the face. Areas that are usually treated are the forehead, the lines between the eyebrows and the lines at the side of the eyes, commonly known as crow's feet. It can also be used in specific areas of the face i.e. the jaw, to soften an angular appearance, in nasal lines and smoker's lines as well as turning downward corners of the mouth up. It can also be used to balance the face and can be used in combination with fillers in an 8 point non surgical lift of the face. The effect of the treatment lasts 3 – 4 months, following which movement is regained and follow up treatments can be given. If you don't have further treatments, the lines will return to their previous appearance.

Botulinum toxin, has been used to treat muscle spasms for over four decades and has proven itself as an effective cosmetic procedure. The dose that is used in cosmetic practice is tiny compared to the doses used medically. Over 3 million of these treatments have been carries out over the past 12 years. Very small doses are injected into the facial muscles, which causes them to relax and smoothes out the skin. Botox is temporary and cannot cause permanent damage by unwanted travel within the body.

The injections begin to take effect after 2 to 4 days but it takes 2 weeks to see the maximum effect and a free follow up appointment will be given to assess whether a top up is required.
